Profile

Joana joined the University of Sheffield in 2021 and was appointed Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry in 2025. 

She qualified in dentistry at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, before completing an MDentSci and consultant training in paediatric dentistry in the UK. She has worked across hospital, community and private dental services in the UK, Portugal and Australia. She completed her PhD at the University of Sheffield in 2026.

Her clinical work focuses on children with complex dental and medical needs, with particular interests in developmental dental conditions and children with rare diseases. At Sheffield Children’s Hospital, she established a joint paediatric dentistry and metabolic bone clinic and she runs an anomalies and joint Paediatric, Restorative and Orthodontic clinic. 

Research interests

Joana’s research aims to improve the care and experiences of children with developmental dental conditions and rare diseases. A central theme is ensuring that children’s own views and experiences inform how outcomes are measured and how services and treatments are designed.

Her PhD focused on tooth hypersensitivity in children with molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH). This work explored children’s lived experiences and led to the development and psychometric evaluation of the MIH-TH questionnaire, a child-centred, condition-specific patient-reported outcome measure. Her ongoing work is examining its use in clinical practice and its translation and validation across different languages and cultural settings.

Her other research interests include:

  • developmental dental conditions, particularly MIH, amelogenesis imperfecta and dentinogenesis imperfecta
  • oral health and dental care for children with rare and complex medical conditions, including X-linked hypophosphataemia, osteogenesis imperfecta and Duchenne muscular dystrophy
  • patient-reported outcome measures and child-centred research methods
  • multidisciplinary models of care and the evaluation of clinically integrated dental services
  • clinical decision-making, consensus methods and the development of evidence-informed guidance in paediatric dentistry

Research group

Joana supervises postgraduate and clinical academic research in paediatric dentistry. She welcomes enquiries from students interested in developmental dental conditions, rare disease, patient-reported outcomes, child-centred research and multidisciplinary models of care.

Teaching interests

Joana teaches undergraduate dental, dental hygiene and dental therapy students, as well as postgraduate students and specialty trainees in paediatric dentistry. Her teaching interests include the management of children with developmental dental conditions and complex medical needs, treatment planning, clinical decision-making and the use of evidence and patient-reported outcomes in practice.

She is a year lead for the BDS programme. She contributes to curriculum development, clinical skills teaching, assessment and supervision across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. As Training Programme Director for Paediatric Dentistry in South Yorkshire, she oversees specialty training and trainee progression.
