ranges
In print, use an en-dash with no spaces either side:
- students aged 21–30
- 3–8 Palmerston Road
- 2-4pm
Online, use hyphens and dashes sparingly. They can cause readability issues with screenreaders.
Instead, it’s better to use phrases for most spans and ranges of numbers. So for date and time spans in text use 'to' instead of a hyphen:
2018 to 2021 not 2018-2021
A to Z not A-Z
2 to 4pm
Exceptions where you can use a dash:
- academic or financial years eg 2023-24
- in technical content, particularly if it’s got a lot of specific spans and ranges of numbers
redundancy
Cut out words that don't add anything to the meaning of your sentence.
You can register now, or alternatively wait until July.
Pip is the chief protagonist of Great Expectations.
Sometimes a word can seem necessary but you might find you can do without it:
The charity raises money to buy vital equipment.
