MSc Molecular Biology and Biotechnology
Anshita's background in botany meant she was keen to specialise in molecular biology at masters level. Having previously worked on a biotechnology project, the MSc at Sheffield offered the perfect blend to match her interests.

What made you want to study your course?

I was drawn to the combination of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. Having previously worked on a biotech project, I wanted to delve deeper into this field. With a background in botany, I was particularly eager to specialise in Molecular Biology. This course offered the ideal blend of subjects for my interests.

Why did you choose the University of Sheffield?

The University of Sheffield is renowned as one of the top Russell Group universities. I had heard excellent feedback about the university and learned that its Students’ Union is one of the best in the UK. This made [it] the perfect choice for the next step in my academic journey.

What skills have you developed during your course?

Alongside acquiring comprehensive theoretical knowledge, I have gained hands-on experience with various molecular biology techniques that will be invaluable for my future research. The extensive literature review helped me understand different scientific areas and discover new career possibilities. Interacting with peers from diverse backgrounds has also enhanced my communication and teamwork skills, which are crucial in any profession globally.

What have you enjoyed most about your course?

The diverse range of modules made learning exciting. I learnt science but also got to know how industries work and where the world is headed in terms of scientific discovery. I enjoyed collaborating with different people on various assignments. Serving as the chair of the Student Staff Committee allowed me to understand student challenges and facilitate communication between faculty and students. Overall, it was a wonderful experience.

What are you planning to do after your degree?

After completing my course, I plan to pursue a PhD and have already started applying to several projects. In the meantime, I am also applying for Graduate Scientist roles in biotech companies, with a goal of working in the pharmaceutical industry.
