Undergraduate Biomedical Science student scoops Education Award

Congratulations to Julian Jung, MBiomedSci Biomedical Science student who has won the Student Peer Teaching and Mentoring Award at the University's 2024 Education Awards.

Julian Jung with Professor Mary Vincent

We're really proud to share that Julian Jung, one of our MBiomedSci Biomedical Science students, has won the Student Peer Teaching and Mentoring Award at the University's 2024 Education Awards.

This award recognises students who have provided peer teaching and/or mentoring which has had a significant impact on student or staff learning.

Julian was nominated for enhancing the student learning experience as a leader and coordinator in the Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) scheme within the School of Biosciences, and as a teaching assistant for the Level 3 Forensic Anatomy module. Julian's commitment to supporting others has benefitted the practice of the current coordinators and leaders of the PAL scheme, and enabled him to earn Advanced Fellow of the Higher Education Academy status.

As a PAL Leader, Julian directly influenced a large number of students, positively impacting on their learning.

Julian was nominated for:

  • Devising and leading weekly revision sessions for Level 1 Biomedical Science students.
  • Championing the “Think-Pair-Share” approach, allowing discipline-related knowledge to be covered while also integrating the Sheffield Graduate Attributes - interpersonal skills and working with others.
  • Providing a range of activities to support students in their individual journey, promoting participation and supporting equality of opportunity.
  • Mentoring other PAL leaders to hone their skills, providing feedback and supporting leaders to develop their skills in delivering high quality teaching.

Receiving this Education Award is an incredible honour. It is, so to speak, the cherry on top of the cake of so many wonderful experiences and great connections with both students and staff I have made through being a part of the PAL scheme. I am so grateful for having had the opportunity to make a difference to student learning at the University.

"For me, seeing people grow and develop has been the most satisfying experience of being a PAL leader/coordinator by far. Whether students start to feel more confident in their knowledge and their abilities to excel in their degree or leaders realise their potential in making a difference to first-year students, contributing to this kind of personal growth in others is something I am truly proud of."
