In Memoriam, J. Cheryl Exum
We are saddened by the news of Prof. Cheryl Exum’s recent passing.
Prof Exum was Professor Emeritus at the University of Sheffield, after a vibrant career in the Department of Biblical Studies and the Sheffield Centre for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies. Cheryl’s research and teaching impacted the field of Hebrew Bible studies, especially her work on Song of Songs, feminist biblical studies, and the reception of the Bible in culture and art history.
In 2004, together with the late Prof. David Clines and Keith W. Whitelam, Cheryl founded Sheffield Phoenix Press, which remains a leading publisher of academic biblical studies books. Among other honours, Prof Exum served as the president of the Society for Old Testament Studies, and held an honorary doctorate from the University of Uppsala. She will be remembered for her mentorship and her scholarship, in particular her books Fragmented Women: feminist (sub)versions of biblical narratives (1993); and Plotted, Shot, and Painted: cultural representations of biblical women (1996).
May her memory continue to inspire a new generation of scholars.
