Commonly asked questions
- Do I need to attend all the activities in induction week?
Yes absolutely! These events will provide you with important information about your study at Sheffield and will make settling in much easier.
We have ensured that there is plenty of time during the week so that you can attend all the university fairs for clubs and societies, have time to get to know the other Pharmacy students and other students in your accommodation.
For sessions shaded in blue, you do not have to be on campus, they are reminders that during this week you are required to complete mandatory training.
- What do I need to bring to the sessions in induction week?
You will probably want to make notes during these sessions, so equip yourself with paper and pen or an electronic note taking alternative.
- Do I need to buy books before joining the course?
No, copies of all our main textbooks are available either online or in hardback format through the library. We will let you know about potential books as we teach you. We strongly recommend that if you do purchase textbooks you do that through second hand book sellers like abe books.
- Do I need to have a computer / laptop for my course?
No, it is not essential. Where use of a laptop is essential, sessions will take place in rooms which are equipped with the relevant computer equipment. The university has a number of areas which allow 24 hour access to computers for writing reports etc.
If you do choose to buy a laptop, please be aware that the university supports the use of PCs not of MAC computers and staff will not be able to help with difficulties with using MAC computers.
If you buy a computer, as a student you will be able to download the needed software e.g. Word, Powerpoint from the University free of charge.
- I need support with my learning, where do I go?
There is an overview of support available on the website, here: Student support
If you have a disability or a specific learning need, please contact DDSS (the Disability and Dyslexia Support Service): DDSS.
We also have school based staff who will introduce you to the services available during welcome week.
There is also study support available: Digital learning support and Library information.
