Maria joined the University of Sheffield in June 2024 to lead the development of Pharmacy Practice teaching in the Sheffield MPharm programme.

Before this, she worked at Keele University, first as a Prescribing Support Pharmacist (2002 – 2008) before joining the MPharm programme as an Academic Clinical Educator, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Pharmacy Practice (2008 – 2024). She was also a tutor for the Postgraduate Diploma in Community Pharmacy (2001-2009). While at Keele, she completed a professional doctorate in teaching decision-making and professional ethics. Her roles included leading ethics-based inter-professional education across the health faculty, Pharmacy Practice Team Leader, Investigating Officer for Health and Conduct concerns and School Admissions Tutor.

Maria registered as a pharmacist in 1995 and practised in community pharmacy and primary care before entering academia

Research interests

Maria’s research interests lie in pedagogy.

She has a particular interest in ethics and supporting the development of professionalism in pharmacy students. 

She has also published innovative teaching approaches using the arts to deepen the student understanding of a patient’s journey through their illness and to help further develop student empathy and compassion.
