Why communication matters
Communication is the way that messages are shared between people, whether that’s through writing, spoken words, eye contact or body language.
It shapes every aspect of our lives, and communication difficulties can have a profound impact on people’s lives.
Within healthcare, Speech and Language Therapists support children and adults with a range of communication difficulties, such as aphasia and dysarthria. But communication isn’t just for specialists - every healthcare professional relies on good communication to involve patients in decision-making and improve health outcomes. And it's a valuable skill in almost every job or university course.
When we are born, it is our cry and murmurs that help us form attachments, and when we pass away, it is many people's wish to communicate their thoughts and wishes to their loved ones. I was inspired by the work SLTs do to support those with difficulties communicating because it is so constitutive to who we are.

World Communication Event workshops
On Thursday 6 November 2025 we’re partnering with the Faculty of Arts and Humanities as part of World Communication Week. We’ll be exploring the importance of communication, and the various ways we communicate across the globe.
We’re hosting a series of workshops aimed at students in years 10 - 13. The workshops take a broad look at communication, and are suitable for students studying English, psychology, languages, art, sociology, history, science, or any other GCSE/A-level subject where you might use communication.
Schools are invited to join us on campus for two interactive 50-minute workshops, followed by an optional campus tour and Q&A. It's a chance for students to get a taste of university life and explore a range of exciting topics.
Workshops available:
- Communication in Healthcare
- How do we make sound? Speech and Language Therapy and Linguistics
- Beyond Borders: Communicating in a Connected World
- Tattooing as cross-cultural communication
- Troll Talking: Communicating with Civility
