Speech & Language Therapy: Speech Sound Difficulties in Children

In our Speech and Language Therapy taster session, we'll take a look at the support Speech and Language Therapists offer children with speech sound difficulties. You'll have the chance to speak to current students and also pick up some top tips for applying.

This is an exciting opportunity to learn more about the Speech and Language Therapy profession and the undergraduate course at the University of Sheffield. 

You'll hear how speech and language therapists support speech sound difficulties in children (which is one of the many areas speech and language therapists can work in) and you will have the opportunity to meet current students and ask them any questions you might have about studying at Sheffield. 

We'll also give you some key tips to help you with your application!

Orthoptics: More than meets the eye - the fascinating science behind vision assessment

We'll give you an overview of the role of an Orthoptist and what it's like to study at Sheffield. You'll also get the chance to explore the different aspects of vision and be able to chat with current students.

In this detailed and interactive Orthoptics taster session, you'll learn what the role of an Orthoptist in eye care entails and what studying the programme at the University of Sheffield is like. 

We'll explore how orthoptists assess vision, and why it isn’t all about reading down a letter chart! By the end, you'll be able to understand how Orthoptists can assess visual function in any patient, including those who can’t tell us what they can see. 

You'll also hear from current Orthoptics students and staff and have the chance to ask any question you have.

Nursing: The Endocrine System

Date: Wednesday 19 November 2025

In our exciting Nursing taster, you'll learn how the endocrine system works, how blood glucose levels are regulated and gain an insight in one common endocrine disease - diabetes mellitus. You'll also hear from current students on the course and get the chance to ask any questions you may have.

Join our exciting Adult Nursing taster session where we’ll take a deep dive into the endocrine system, learning how to regulate blood glucose levels and about one common endocrine disease. 

The session will involve taught content from the Nursing (Adult) degree, an interactive quiz and a chance to ask questions and chat with the Nursing programme lead and current students! 

By the end of this interactive taster session, you will be able to: 

  • Gain an insight on the endocrine system with a focus on the pancreatic islets
  • Describe the actions of insulin and glucagon
  • Explain how blood glucose levels are regulated
  • Have an awareness of the common endocrine disorder- diabetes mellitus
