Machine Technician, Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, Integrated Manufacturing Group
Sean's drive to improve and develop has been outstanding. He is always willing to learn new skills and he throws himself into everything he does to ensure the best outcome is delivered.
Michael Portnell, Lead Engineer, Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre
Can you sum up what you do in one sentence?
I’m an Assembly Technician, and I use my mechanical engineer experience to support projects at the AMRC.
You were nominated as an inspiration to others, how does it feel to be recognised?
It’s quite humbling, and it's nice to be recognised for more than my technical capabilities.
What part of your work brings you the most pride or joy?
I'm very happy to be working on a project, which is hopefully going to make a big impact on people's lives in terms of bringing down people's energy costs and providing work.
The impact Sean has had on the projects has not gone unnoticed by the team or the customer.

How does your work create an impact in research, innovation and education?
In my job we support the Rolls-Royce SMR (small modular reactor) team in helping them further their design for the small modular reactors.
What is one thing about your workspace or role that would surprise people?
People would be surprised by the scale of it, that the parts we can be working with can be up to 10 tonnes or more. So it's almost on a civil engineering scale as opposed to a machining scale.
Are there any upcoming projects or new technologies that you’re particularly excited to be working on?
I find the Rolls-Royce SMR (Small Modular Reactor) project pretty exciting. It’s a project to reduce the scale of the power plants and reactors so that they can better benefit from economies of scale, meaning more of the parts can be made in factories because more of the overall parts are being made.
