The Faculty of Social Sciences is delighted to celebrate the official opening of The Wave, our new flagship Social Sciences building. Throughout November we will be holding a series of events and activities for staff and students to celebrate the opening of The Wave.

Creating Power Podcasts

Monday 13 November, 13:00 to 14:00
Seminar Room 3, The Wave

Find out about the launch of JournoWave Podcast - a new podcast from the School of Journalism, Media and Communication and get some tips about setting up your own!

Jenny Eells and Anna Jones are both BBC trained journalists and have brought their industry expertise to their teaching and The Wave.

This hour-long session will take a look at the key components to making a good podcast, give you an opportunity to ask questions and even try out some of the kit that's available to use.

Student Voice - Working with Students as Partners

Come and join this experiential session, to hear about and engage with how to work with students as partners. The session will be run by staff and students and you’ll have the opportunity to take part in:

  1. An innovation station - drop in surgery for staff and students to explore and develop ideas around students as partners 
  2. An 'open mic' platform to share reflections on the work we are already doing
  3. A video dip in - watch videos or explore podcasts around student voice activity in our Faculty.

Crime Reporting

Location: Newsroom 1, The Wave

The School of Journalism, Media and Communication will be showcasing an immersive newsgathering experience that has been created for first-year Journalism Studies students. Participants will take on the role of a reporter as they explore a crime scene, interviewing people at the scene and gathering all the information they need for a news story. We'll then discuss how they would go about writing a news story using all the information they have collected.

There will then be time to brainstorm ideas for how they could use the University's VR and 360 filming equipment on their own programmes.

TikTok Workshop

Friday 17 November, 15:00 to 16:00

Come and join this interactive session and make a TikTok about The Wave! Capture the cafe, show off your department or our lecture theatres or you could even make a tour of the building. The choice is yours. 

At the end of the session, participants can share their TikToks with the group although there is no requirement to publish it if you’d prefer not to do that. Participants should ideally have used TIkTok before, or have some knowledge of the platform, but the session will start with a short guide on 'how to create a TikTok along with some top tips.

Employability Networking Breakfast

It's increasingly important to come together and share our employability ideas and learn from others - come along to this informal networking event to have some breakfast and meet others from across the University. Share good practice, celebrate our successes and get support. 

We would love to welcome those who work in employability roles around the University, staff who are interested in employability, academic staff keen to explore how to embed employability into the curriculum (or who already do so) or anyone interested in helping students get placements.

Screening of Unbreakable

Join our screening of "Unbreakable" - an original play by the School of Journalism, Media and Communication - performed to a sell out audience. “Unbreakable” is a one-act play centred around the everyday trauma journalists experience in the newsroom and it seeks to explore and raise awareness of the impact of trauma on journalists. Devised by Lisa Bradley of the School of Journalism, Media and Communication and TV actress Lucy Mizen, “Unbreakable” draws on Lisa’s own personal experiences as a regional and national reporter for titles like the Sun and the Wakefield Express, as well as interviews with a wide range for journalists from trainee reporters to war correspondents.

Making Sustainable Futures - Launch of the Education for Sustainable Development Network

Are you passionate about creating a sustainable future? Come and join us for the launch of the Staff-Student Education for Sustainable Development Network!  Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) shapes what we teach, how we teach, and who we are. It is part of a commitment by The University of Sheffield to work towards a sustainable future. 

The ESD Network will get together twice a semester to focus on different elements of ESD. These will be friendly, informal, participatory meet ups that give staff and students a chance to meet other folk who are passionate about putting a focus on sustainability at the heart of our education as a university. 

In this session, we will be exploring the connection between engaged, sustainable education and making communities. We will be spreading the word about Education for Sustainable Development through badge and sticker making!

Wellbeing in the Curriculum

Come and join us as we launch our Wellbeing in the Curriculum Toolkit! . 

Integrating wellbeing into the curriculum is an important part of the University's commitment to the University Mental Health Charter. It is also crucial to the staff-student experience and to enhancing student success. This session will formally launch the Faculty's Wellbeing in the Curriculum Toolkit and will provide attendees with an insight into current and potential initiatives in this area.

Our toolkit was developed by Emma Jones from the School of Law, in collaboration with members of our Student Experience and Support Network. After this session, attendees will be able to sign up to attend a series of discussion groups to explore each area of the Toolkit in more detail.

Green Impact Crochet Session

Come along to this crochet craft session where Rachel Bolt, a Green Impact team member, will show you how to get started with crocheting. We’ll be keeping things sustainable by using donated yarn, fabric from recycled clothing and we might even have some carrier bags to use! Colleagues are welcome to drop off any unwanted yarns or fabrics during this session and we’ll be able to provide advice about how you can recycle within the University and the Students Union.
