UK’s leading money saving expert and Team GB’s most decorated Paralympian receive honorary degrees from University of Sheffield

  • Team GB’s most decorated Paralympian, Dame Sarah Storey, will also receive an Honorary Doctor of Letters (Monday 12 January 2026), celebrating her unparalleled sporting achievements and leadership beyond elite sport
  • Hundreds of students will celebrate their academic achievements throughout graduation week (Monday 12 January - Thursday 15 January 2026), which will also see the installation of former Bank of England Chief Economist, Andy Haldane, as the University of Sheffield’s new Chancellor
  • As Chancellor, Andy Haldane will serve as an honorary figurehead and ambassador for the University, overseeing governance, representing the institution globally, and conferring degrees at future graduation ceremonies.

The UK's favourite money saving expert Martin Lewis and Team GB's most successful Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey will receive honorary degrees from the University of Sheffield, in recognition of their outstanding achievements and contribution to society.

The University will recognise the two exceptional individuals for the significant impact in their fields and beyond, alongside the latest cohort of graduating students.

Highly respected consumer expert, Martin Lewis, will be made an Honorary Doctor of Letters in recognition of his outstanding contribution to financial education and consumer advocacy on Wednesday 14 January.

Martin is the founder and Executive Chair of Money Saving Expert, the UK’s largest consumer finance website, which supports more than 16 million users each month. Through his work, he has helped millions of people better understand their finances and make informed decisions.

As an award-winning campaigning journalist, Martin presents his own prime time ITV show and is a regular presenter on Good Morning Britain. He also hosts a podcast and YouTube channel, and is the UK’s best-known consumer finance expert.

Martin has spearheaded numerous successful campaigns for financial justice, leading to policy change at the highest level, and has founded two charities supporting people facing financial hardship. 

Also receiving an honorary degree during graduation week is Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey. She will be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters in a ceremony taking place  on Monday 12 January.

Dame Sarah is the most successful British Paralympian of all time, having won 19 gold, eight silver and three bronze medals in swimming and cycling at an unprecedented nine Paralympic Games. She has also claimed 45 world titles and broken numerous world records during her career.

Beyond elite sport, she has played a leading role in championing the importance of sport and physical activity in society. She is an Active Travel Commissioner for South Yorkshire, Interim Chair of Lancashire Cricket Club, and in 2024 was named Leader of the Year at the Leaders in Sport Awards.

Graduation week will also see the installation of former Bank of England Chief Economist Andy Haldane as the new Chancellor of the University of Sheffield on Monday (12 January 2026).

Having taken over from Dame Anne Rafferty in November 2025, Haldane will join graduating students from the University’s Management School and School of Economics in celebrating the completion of their studies.

A University of Sheffield alumnus, Haldane graduated with a BA in Accounting and Financial Management and Economics in 1988 and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters in 2018 in recognition of his distinguished career as an economist.
