I personally think that the “Steel City” is the right place to go if you are interested in Materials Science.
Pursuing a masters degree at The University of Sheffield has been a great experience which allowed me to grow professionally and personally. I have always been very interested in steel, and I personally think that the “Steel City” is the right place to go if you are interested in Materials Science.
I like the fact that the course is friendly for different backgrounds, as our first modules cover elemental concepts about materials science. My undergraduate degree is Mechanical Engineering, and I had classmates from a range of different backgrounds. University staff and professors are friendly and approachable.
My favorite module was Heat and Materials. Even though is one of the toughest, I think it challenges your mind in a good way and helps you to think outside the box. I really enjoyed the steel lectures too; it is inspiring to see when the professor is passionate about the subject.
The university has well equipped labs, which allow us to get some hands-on experience. They also offer different places to study; if you want a very quiet place where you can focus without distractions, you can go to Western Bank Library, or if you like being in a modern building with a lot of facilities, you can go to the Diamond.
Life outside university is very rewarding as well - they have a great number of societies for all kind of interests. I also enjoyed going to Sport Sheffield regularly, where they offer a gym, a swimming pool, and different activities like yoga or Zumba. Sheffield is one of the greenest cities in Europe and there are a lot of parks to explore. Finally, nightlife is fun and there are a lot of pubs and clubs available if you are into going out.
