Why did you choose your course?

I chose to do a Master’s Degree in Aerospace Materials as a follow-on from my undergraduate degree in the same subject. I chose this course both times due to my love for aircraft and my fascination in understanding how and why such heavy objects fly.

I also appreciate the transfer of materials which were initially created for aerospace applications which are now being used in many other sectors; thus, I am very interested in creating and improving efficient aerospace materials.

What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?

So far, I have enjoyed that we constantly apply the knowledge we gain in lectures into real-life problems, through group projects and case studies. For example, in my Design & Manufacture of Composites module, we are encouraged to think critically about applications, by being ambitious but aware of physical, societal and sustainability constraints.

What do you think about Sheffield as a city?

I fell in love with the clean air of Sheffield when I attended an open day in 2010. Its close proximity to the Peak District has given me the opportunity to explore many villages several times since I returned in September.

Sheffield is a great city for students, with opportunities for all types of people and with many social events both in the daytime and later. Additionally, Sheffield is a city where many industries and companies have great relationships with the university, so there are job opportunities awaiting students once we complete our degrees.

Materials Science will definitely provide the best platform for your future and career.

Have you got any particular academic achievements or extra-curricular achievements you’d like to highlight?

I was recently awarded for outstanding service as part of a Christian group that I have been a part of since my undergraduate. That has been a highlight of my masters year so far, as it was lovely to be rewarded for the sustained relationships I have built over my time here in Sheffield.

What are your ambitions for the next few years?

I am currently completing my application for an Engineering Doctorate (EngD), which will involve research into solutions for current and relevant industrial applications and problems. I believe that this will enable me to continue to be a part of the university and live in Sheffield for the near future.

What did you study and where before starting your course?

I studied A-level Physics, Chemistry and Maths as well as AS-Level Biology and Further Maths before commencing an undergraduate degree in Aerospace Materials in 2011. I completed my undergraduate degree in 2014 and worked in the industry before coming back to do a masters degree in 2017.

What would you say to students considering studying Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield?

Just do it! Materials Science will definitely provide the best platform for your future and career. You will always be connected with a network of alumni who span different industries around the world and have come from a city with deep roots in materials science through its history in steelmaking.
