Article Galaxy Scholar (AGS) has been introduced as a pilot service in response to feedback following the Elsevier ‘big deal’ cancellation. This is in addition to the range of other routes available for accessing Elsevier content (see Resource cancellation FAQs).
For urgent requests, AGS can provide instant access to paywalled journal articles where the Library no longer has an active subscription to the journal. AGS is available to University staff and postgraduate researchers, for Elsevier journals in the current and previous year of publication.
When should I use AGS?
Articles purchased via AGS cost £25 per article and should only be requested in urgent cases, such as a same- day media request to comment on newly published research. If you do not require immediate access to an article, the Request and Receive service is the preferred option and provides access to fifty percent of articles within two hours.
Usage of AGS will be monitored for sustainability and details of usage will be shared with Faculties.

How do I use AGS?
You can make an AGS request through StarPlus, University Library Discovery, available from the ‘My Services’ menu in MUSE.
- Search for a journal article in StarPlus and select the 'Search beyond Library collections' option on the top left hand side of the results page.
- You will then have the option to request the article via Request and Receive or AGS. Request and Receive should be used where possible. If Request and Receive is not suitable, you can use the ‘Place order via Article Galaxy Scholar’ link to receive a copy of the article via AGS.
- You should receive a pdf of the article within a couple of minutes, usually via a link on screen, and an email.
- You can also access AGS via LibKey Nomad, or using the ‘Find It’ link when searching third party databases like Scopus.
- For all routes, ensure you are logged in to StarPlus.
