“Stories are our code” - Celebrating Black History Month 2026
October is Black History Month, and this year we have events running throughout the month as part of our Lib Fest programme. Find out what events are happening and book your place here.
Throughout October the University is celebrating Black History Month with events running as part of our year long library liberation festival Lib Fest.
Lib Fest is a Students’ Union and University Library collaboration which centres previously missing voices in our University Library through exhibitions, curated collections, creative workshops and reading groups. Black history is an integral part of Britain’s national story and while October provides a focused opportunity for engagement, this work is rooted in a year-round commitment to visibility, education and recognition.
The focus this year is on honouring our communities and the Library, the Students’ Union and the Staff Race Equality Network have joined up with Sheffield based Black Tech Expo to organise a celebration on 21st October, entitled Stories are Our Code. We’ll be hosting an afternoon of creativity in the Library’s Digital Commons followed by an evening author showcase, where local and national black authors will be speaking about their writing.
Following this, on the 27th October, the Library is teaming up with the SU reading society BookSoc to read and discuss Tochi Eze’s debut novel This Kind of Trouble. Staff and students from the network and all friends and allies are warmly invited to join these events!
