Professor Benjamin Ziemann joined the Department of History in 2005 as a lecturer in Modern German History. He is a leading authority on 19th and 20th century German history, particularly the military, social and cultural history of the First World War.
In his acclaimed study of Weimar Germany after the Great War, Contested Commemorations: republican war veterans and Weimar political culture, Professor Ziemann analyses the ways in which remembrance and experience of the War were transformed along political lines in post-war Germany.
He reveals how personal recollections fed into a public narrative, challenging the assumption that nationalist agendas dominated commemoration.
He explores the participation of Social Democrat veterans in remembrance of the war at all levels, including purposefully visiting war memorials, joining ‘no more war’ movements, and campaigning for a politics of international solidarity.
Professor Ziemann has authored, edited and co-edited fifteen books, and has published more than a hundred journal articles and book chapters. His articles have appeared in leading peer-reviewed journals including:
