About the programme

Global Conversations was created through staff and student collaboration to fill a gap for students who want to work in East Asia, but don’t know what careers are possible. With funds from Campaigns and Alumni Relations, the department launched its pilot programme in 2022 allowing students in Japan to connect with alumni who have been living and working in Japan.

The programme connects students with alumni on a 1:1 basis, allowing students to learn about diverse careers in government, corporate sector, education, the law, and others. The programme also builds in skill sessions to help students understand the importance of networking and communication.

Global Conversations is a unique programme for learning about the diverse career paths possible for students with a degree from the School of Languages, Arts and Societies. The programme began its first year with Japanese Studies students and alumni in Japan and we plan to expand to China and South Korea in coming years.

Read below to learn about the experiences of students who participated in Global Conversations and what they learned about working in Japan.

Student experiences

Some short quotes by our students on their experiences of Tokyo on their year abroad.

I applied in the hopes of expanding my knowledge on networking, discovering different job roles and opportunities that are available after graduating with a degree from SEAS

Alyssa

I made an important discovery of the limitations, or more accurately the lack of limitations, for a graduate from the SEAS department

Sophie

I have realised the importance of the action I take whilst completing my degree, as exploring areas of interest within my studies could ultimately aid in guiding my future career path

Harriet

The important thing is, though, to give things a try, even if you are sometimes unsure.
