A new website has been launched for the International Network for Critical China Studies (INCCS). Led by Dr David Tobin, the network is a global community of scholars pursuing rigorous, independent research into contemporary China.

INCCS brings together academics from across disciplines to explore China’s politics, economy, society and culture; and to examine the global implications of its rise. At a time when debates about China’s influence are increasingly complex and polarised, the network provides a space for nuanced, evidence-based discussion that bridges scholarly and policy perspectives.

The website also showcases INCCS’s growing portfolio of policy-relevant research. For example, the report Preventing Transnational Repression: the Case of the Uyghur Diaspora by David Tobin and Nyrola Elimä examines how civil society organisations, governments, and diaspora communities respond to coercion and surveillance beyond China’s borders. Another key publication, Making Islam Chinese: Religious Policy and Mosque Sinicisation in the Xi Era by Hannah Theaker and David Stroup, investigates the impacts of state policy on Hui Muslim religious practice and mosque architecture.

The new site will act as a central platform for the network’s activities, hosting policy-focused research, networking and research-based workshops. It reflects INCCS’s commitment to fostering international dialogue and ensuring that critical, well-informed voices on China are accessible to policymakers, researchers and the wider public alike.

By connecting scholars with policy makers, media outlets around the world, and international audiences, the platform strengthens the capacity for collaborative, independent inquiry into one of the most pressing and dynamic areas of global study today.
