What made you choose to study at Sheffield and your course?

Choosing to study law came from both my curiosity and my values. I'm interested in everything to a certain degree, and law gives that exposure. Law offers a unique opportunity to understand how society, business, politics, and people's lives intersect. It is a discipline that constantly challenges you to think critically and continue learning.

I've also always found it difficult to accept situations where people are clearly treated unfairly or where power is used to take advantage of others. Although I recognize that the legal system is not perfect and that inequalities can exist, I hope to contribute, even in a small way, to making justice more accessible and meaningful.

The University of Sheffield stood out to me because of its excellent reputation, high levels of student satisfaction, and the strong sense of community that so many students spoke about. I wanted to study somewhere that would challenge me academically while also making me feel supported, and Sheffield felt like the perfect fit.

How did you research the University to find out about studying in Sheffield?

I first learned more about the University of Sheffield by attending a university fair, where I had the opportunity to speak with Udochika Ezeocha, the regional representative for Africa). After that, I spent time exploring the University's website, watching campus tours online, and speaking with current Sheffield students about their experiences. Hearing first-hand about the supportive environment, quality of teaching, and student life gave me confidence that Sheffield was the right choice for me.

How do you hope your time at Sheffield will prepare you for your long-term career goals?

Although I am still exploring the area of law I would like to specialize in, I am particularly interested in capital markets and data protection law. I hope to build a career that allows me to work in both the UK and Nigeria, gaining international experience while contributing to legal development in my home country.

I am especially looking forward to taking advantage of internship opportunities, networking with legal professionals, and getting involved with the Edward Bramley Law Society. I believe these experiences, alongside Sheffield's academic teaching, will help me develop both the practical skills and professional network needed for a successful legal career.

What are you most looking forward to experiencing in the city of Sheffield outside of your studies?

Outside of my studies, I am excited to become involved in student societies, explore everything the city has to offer, experience the local food scene, and travel to other parts of the UK. I am also looking forward to meeting people from different cultures and building friendships that will last long after university.

What advice would you give to other international students considering applying for a scholarship at Sheffield?

My advice would be to apply, even if you are unsure whether you'll be successful. Don't underestimate yourself. Be authentic throughout your application and let your genuine experiences and ambitions shine through. Scholarships like this have the potential to change lives, so don't let self-doubt stop you from taking the opportunity.

What has been your biggest academic achievement so far?

My greatest academic achievement isn't simply the grades I have earned, but the personal growth that came with achieving them. Throughout my education, I have learned resilience, discipline, and the importance of embracing challenges rather than avoiding them. Those lessons have shaped the way I approach learning and are qualities I know will support me throughout my time at Sheffield and beyond.
