The University has an incredible range of support systems
How did you first hear about your scholarship?
During my one year voluntary National Youth Service programme in north western Nigeria, I was fortunate enough to be introduced to a Chevening alumnus during a conference. He described Chevening as a UK government funded international scholarship targeted towards global leaders and future influencers. I looked it up on the internet and was fascinated by the popularity of Chevening and the alumni strength. I researched about Chevening alumni in Nigeria and realised that they were accomplished leaders in all sectors. I knew I wanted to be part of the network of outstanding people whose intellectual resources I would draw from in shaping my own career.
What made you choose to study at Sheffield and your course?
When researching universities and courses, I was interested in the University of Sheffield because it was a top ranking school, member of the Russell group and was excellent in teaching and research. The University was also excellent in student support which is very important for some of the international students who have never had a UK university education. The University is also located in the beautiful city of Sheffield which is safe, green and diverse.
What was your initial impression of Sheffield and the university when you first arrived?
I arrived in Manchester airport by noon where the Meet and Greet team were waiting for me. This was very helpful because I had never visited the UK before and they served as a cushion by making it easy for me to get to Sheffield. Upon my arrival, my landlord was kind and very helpful in settling me in. I must say that the weather was cold and it was raining, I got an umbrella the night I arrived!
What are the highlights of your experience in Sheffield so far?
Firstly, the weather is very unpredictable, so I always assume it will rain. The students are very friendly and the residents are quite nice. The teaching has been great and the libraries have been amazing.
What would you say to a student considering studying at the University of Sheffield?
Firstly, I would tell the student that they are on the right track. I would tell them that the cost of living in Sheffield is very affordable, the environment is very safe and the teaching and research system is exceptional. It will be a decision they will not regret.
