Beyond academics and social life, the university's focus on employability truly impressed me.
When I was deciding where to study in the UK, the University of Sheffield stood out for several reasons. First and foremost, the university's reputation for academic excellence was a significant factor. As a member of the Russell Group, Sheffield offered a world-class teaching and learning experience, along with exceptional research opportunities. The Business Management program is accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), the EFMD Quality Improvement System (EQUIS), and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). These prestigious accreditations are recognised globally as benchmarks of excellence in business education, placing the program among an elite group of business schools worldwide.
The city of Sheffield itself was a big part of why I chose to study here. Known as 'The Outdoor City', it offers the perfect mix of vibrant city life and peaceful green spaces. As someone who loves nature and outdoor activities, I was excited to discover that the Peak District National Park was just a short train or bus ride away. At the same time, the city centre had so much to offer - from student-friendly cafes and shops to a variety of cultural events. The sense of community, both on and off campus, was truly welcoming, and it made me feel at home even before I officially moved.
One of my favourite aspects of university life was the Students' Union, which is consistently ranked as the best in the UK. It became the heart of my social life, offering a wide range of clubs, societies, and volunteering opportunities. A highlight for me was being part of the Malaysian and Singaporean Society (MASSOC). Through MASSOC, I had the incredible opportunity to take part in one of their flagship events, Mnight, a theatrical play, where I took on the role of contemporary dance choreographer. It was an amazing experience that allowed me to pursue my passion for dance and performance, while also connecting with people from diverse backgrounds and building lasting friendships.
Beyond academics and social life, the university's focus on employability truly impressed me. From career workshops to placement opportunities, Sheffield ensured that I graduated not only with a degree but also with the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the professional world. The careers service provided personalised guidance, which helped me land an internship that played a vital role in shaping my career path. During my penultimate year, I worked as a marketing intern at Ansys, a global leader in engineering simulation software. This experience was invaluable, giving me hands-on exposure to the corporate world and helping me develop a wide range of transferable skills, gain confidence in a professional setting, and expand my network. The internship went so well that I was offered a full-time position at Ansys after graduation and I am incredibly grateful for the foundation Sheffield helped me build.
Looking back, choosing the University of Sheffield was one of the best decisions I ever made. It wasn’t just about earning a degree, it was about finding a supportive community, embracing new experiences, and growing into the best version of myself. I'll always be proud to call Sheffield my second home.
