The scholarship gave me the financial support I needed to fund for my studies, and I wouldn’t have been here without it
How did you first hear about your scholarship?
I first read about the scholarship online while exploring the university’s international students community; I was ecstatic to learn about the chance to have my studies funded.
A few weeks after submitting my application, I received an email congratulating me on the scholarship. I felt so overwhelmed and immediately ran to my parents in excitement; I knew at that moment that my hopes of studying my first-choice degree (in a top research university!) was finally achieved.
What made you choose to study at Sheffield and your course?
I’ve always found myself drawn to Maths, Chemistry, and the Arts, and developed a passion for green buildings throughout high school. At the start of my university search, I hoped to find a degree that integrates sustainable/organic structures with surrounding environment. The University of Sheffield’s Architectural Engineering Meng degree seemed like the perfect course suited to my interests; I realized I could apply engineering concepts in real-world situations while also emphasizing social and environmental contexts in relation to engineering solutions. The University’s world-leading research and immersive student experience offered by the Student Union encouraged me even more to apply, soon making Sheffield my top-choice university.
How did you research the University to find out about studying in Sheffield?
After searching for the top universities for Engineering in the UK and exploring which university experience was the best amongst students nationwide, I knew the University of Sheffield was a perfect match. Not only was the University one of the leading higher-education institutions in research and output, but the Student Union was also ranked top in all of UK for 5 consecutive years; something that really encouraged my decision. I found the Sheffield website a very useful source in understanding what my student experience would look like, and I especially loved the YouTube videos on their channel.
What are you enjoying about your first semester?
The Diamond! I remember going to my first lab of the semester mesmerised by the numerous workshops and facilities available for students, the labs are by far my favourite part of my course, and I really enjoy how immersive our hands-on experiments are. I always find myself spending hours studying in the Diamond after lectures, grabbing a bite from the café, and completing assignments overlooking St George’s Park.
How has (or will) the scholarship benefit your studies?
The scholarship gave me the financial support I needed to fund for my studies, and I wouldn’t have been here without it. I find myself more motivated to perform well in my courses as well, and it was an amazing opportunity to study abroad in a new, immersive teaching environment.

To explore all the opportunities available on campus, and delve into the large list of courses the university offers; you might find a degree you previously hadn’t considered. The University of Sheffield has so much to offer; make use of the clubs and societies, the facilities, the on-hand support from staff, and even the city life!
