The selection of modules forming part of my degree was what helped my decision
What are your main responsibilities in your current role?
I am responsible for the design and analysis of high-speed electrical machines. My typical working day includes weekly meetings with my supervisor, literature study followed by working on hypothesis using different simulation tools such as MATLAB, and last but not least attending various seminars and trainings related to my degree.
Please outline your career history: how did you get to where you are today?
Following my bachelor's degree in India, I worked for one and a half years in the transformer and motor manufacturing industry. These placements helped and encouraged me to form the platform to pursue an advanced degree in electrical machines at the University of Sheffield. While pursuing MSc, I was exposed to research-based learning which then gradually captured my interest and admiration while working on a MSc research project, leading me to pursue an MPhil.
Why did you want to come to the University of Sheffield to study your chosen degree?
One of the few reasons to opt for the University of Sheffield was the selection of modules offered as a part of my degree, and the involvement of the Electrical Machines and Drives (EMD) group in pioneering research along with potential companies such as Rolls-Royce and Siemens Gamesa. However, the support provided by the university for international students and also a considerate amount of scholarship played a vital role for me in finalising my offer.
What were your favourite things about or best memories of the University of Sheffield?
I found the University of Sheffield very welcoming and supporting to the students regardless of the study level. Besides the studies, I feel the University of Sheffield Student Union is, without a doubt, one of the best aspects of this university. Attending various social events organised by TUoS's Students Union has helped me understand the culture and develop social skills and make new friends. Time spent with friends from both my course and the university accommodation is one of the best memories I will always carry with me. 24/7 access to the libraries and delicious food served in the university cafes, pubs, and Students Union are some of the best things I definitely miss a lot. Student life in Sheffield city brings a lot of great experiences due to diversity. One can be lost in the serenity of nature one day and then experience happening social life in one of the cafés and pubs on the other.
Please explain how has your qualification and/or time at Sheffield helped you in your career?
The qualification earned at the University of Sheffield has helped me form a strong network with designated professionals in the domain I am working in. I have been fortunate enough to have the continuous support of amazing staff from the career services department in doing so. Various seminars, events and one to one appointments have always been the backbone of my professional development.
What has been your greatest achievement to date?
I believe being able to develop as a better person socially and professionally while at the university is my greatest achievement. The lessons learned and relations earned while at the university played a vital role in bringing me where I am today.
