One of the most open-minded & warm international academic communities

The first things I heard about the University of Sheffield were that it is a research-intensive university and a member of the Russell Group. I went onto the university website to find out more about the programmes they offered. I also looked at the university rankings as a whole as well as the individual subject (philosophy) ranking in the UK and the world. These things convinced me that Sheffield was the right university for me.

Upon arriving in Sheffield, I liked the fact that it was a world-class university in a city where living costs are reasonably lower than in bigger cities such as London. I loved that the university had a very vibrant philosophy department. I was very impressed with the university, the amazing academic infrastructure and beautiful campus all at the heart of a lovely city. The city is so beautifully structured with all the important buildings and places within reach, there is a very good transportation network linking the city and lots of cheerful people – it’s a city where everyone makes an effort to be nice.

Besides the regular academic work, I volunteered to serve as one of the Postgraduate Students' Reps for the Department of Philosophy and that has brought me closer to my fellow students (l listen to them and solicit their concerns) and staff of the department (both teaching and administrative). This has enriched my experience. I am also a member of the Black and Minority Ethic society, The Ghana Society and Philosophy Students' society. Just some of over 350 student societies run from the Students' Union.

The highlights of my course have been the very interesting modules, like the philosophy of climate change, philosophy of law, metaphysics, moral psychology, global justice etc. We also have the opportunity of choosing modules across these fields and that is very enriching. I have enjoyed the diversity of modules and lecturers within the faculty, and there are wonderfully engaging activities which makes the learning of philosophy fun. To anyone considering Sheffield, I would say that this is the best place to pursue higher education because it has one of the most open minded and warm international academic communities – it really does make international students feel at home. Life as a student in Sheffield is nothing short of amazing given its vibrant student community.
