Sheffield offered me a course that I was desperate to study and that I felt would bring out the best of my skills

Why did you choose to study at the University of Sheffield?

I chose Sheffield because of the diversity it offers. Not only was I able to study the joint honours course of my choice (History and Philosophy), but it also offered a city location where I didn’t feel I would get lost. It was the perfect size. Additionally, the University wasn’t spread all over the city it was only a 10-minute walk from place to place and hence offered a campus-like experience within a city. Plus it was only a 2-hour train from London meaning it wasn’t too long to get home.

What have you enjoyed most about your Philosophy and History degree so far?

So far I have enjoyed the way the subjects offer me something different. I’m able to study the topics I have always wanted to in history, and Philosophy offers me the freedom to explore so many different subjects and to explore the subject more independently.

What advice would you give to someone trying to choose where to study?

I would recommend that they think about the core things they want from a university. For me, coming from London I was desperate to live in a city but I didn’t want to be too far away from home. I was also keen to explore a different culture and so wanted to branch out of the south of England. I would recommend that you think carefully about what the new location you choose has to offer you, but most importantly look at the course! Sheffield offered me both a course I was desperate to study and I felt would help me bring out the best of my skills.

Tell us about one thing you like doing outside your course

Outside of my course I’m involved in Philosophy society, as publicity secretary. This has given me the opportunity to meet people in all years and to develop my social skills in a more official environment. Additionally I love exploring historical buildings and Sheffield has given me the opportunity to visit places like Chatsworth House.

How would you describe the city of Sheffield to someone who hasn't been here before?

Homely, diverse and quirky. Sheffield has a lot to offer for such a small city, it has beautiful little coffee shops and vintage shops but also has Meadowhall a 15-minute tram ride away. It’s the perfect mix.

Have you got any particular plans for the future - either for what you might do when you finish, or projects that you are planning whilst at uni?

Having participated in an Internship at CBRE this summer, I hope to apply for their graduate scheme this September and hope to be accepted on to their non-cog scheme where I can work towards both my RICS qualification and my APC, whilst working.
