The combination of theoretical learning and hands-on practice has fueled my passion for entering the UX industry after graduation.
Why did you choose to study your programme?
As an undergraduate student of Media and Sociology, I was deeply intrigued by the underlying logic of how digital media serves as a medium to carry cultural data. Additionally, the course’s strong emphasis on practical applications aligned perfectly with my goal of actively participating in the design of digital cultural products.
What made you want to study in the UK and specifically the University of Sheffield?
I spent the first 18 years of my life in a typical coastal town in northern China. Studying abroad was an exciting and life-changing decision for me. I chose the UK for its world-class education, vibrant cultural scene, renowned theatre performances, and creative industries, including iconic shows like Sherlock. The University of Sheffield attracted me with its academic excellence, interdisciplinary focus, and welcoming community, making it the perfect place to start this new chapter.
What did you enjoy most about your programme?
For instance, in the module IPA6100 Managing Digital Products, I worked with my group from brainstorming and stakeholder analysis to drafting work packages, enabling me to systematically learn how to conceptualise a cultural digital product project from scratch. Similarly, in the optional module IPA61004 Design Cultural Data Products, I gained insights into the database structures behind museum websites. Through activities like writing weekly journals, I honed my skills in using XML language and conducting data visualisation while also benefiting from the instructor’s feedback. Moreover, this module gave me the opportunity to design a prototype using Adobe XD for the first time.
This combination of theoretical learning and hands-on practice has fueled my passion for entering the UX industry after graduation.
What skills did you develop during your course that have been useful for you as a graduate?
Learning the logic behind structuring the information architecture of a website or app, creating project management documentation from scratch, and designing an Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD) provided me with hands-on skills. Practical experience with tools like Adobe XD and the ability to critically select and utilise online resources have greatly benefited me in preparing for my professional career after graduation.
During my time at university, I also actively engaged in opportunities provided by the institution, such as serving as a departmental student representative and a campus ambassador, which helped me develop my communication and research skills. The university’s Career Connect service was instrumental in refining my CV after graduation, while the lecturers in my department offered invaluable support and guidance to help me transition into the workplace.
What was your favourite thing about the city of Sheffield?
What I love most about Sheffield are the diverse small eateries offering cuisines from around the world, especially the authentic Chinese food, and the countless green parks to explore. I’ve enjoyed throwing frisbees with friends in Weston Park, watching squirrels and ducks in Endcliffe Park, and regularly playing badminton and basketball at the Student Union Sports Club—activities that help me relax after studying.
Do you have any advice for students thinking about studying this course at Sheffield?
My advice is to make the most of the year. Actively engage with the programme community and communicate your interests and thoughts about the course with your lecturers. Start exploring your career plans early and go beyond the curriculum to deeply explore topics that interest you. Lastly, don’t stress—today is the youngest you’ll ever be, and it’s never too late to pursue what you want. Enjoy the journey!
