Robert Stern is one of Britain’s most important historians of philosophy. He is best known for his work on Hegel, and has played an extraordinarily active role in the life of UK philosophy. For health reasons, Stern has recently retired from his position as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sheffield. 

We held an event in the Firth Court Council Room at the University of Sheffield all day on Saturday 18th May and Sunday 19th May with the aim of celebrating his distinguished career and discussing his work with a number of his peers with whom he has worked with for decades. The invited speakers reflected upon Stern’s work, and his contributions to the history of philosophy. The focus was on his work on Hegel, as well as other figures Stern has worked on, including Kant, Luther, and Knud Løgstrup.

This event was a celebration of Bob Stern’s work and career. A selection of his peers presented papers on themes from his work on Kant, Hegel and Løgstrup. The talks were excellent, and the weather was surprisingly good too! Crucially, Bob was able to attend, and enjoyed hearing the talks, and engaging with the speakers. We'd like to thank MIND, the EJP, the BSHP, and the Hegel Society of Great Britain for funding this. It was a moving couple of days, in a difficult situation, and we really appreciate the financial support.
