Our capabilities align to the Government’s Defence Science and Technology portfolio, to help ensure the UK and its allies remain at the forefront of technological advancements and insights.

Advanced Materials and Manufacturing

The University of Sheffield and its Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) are globally recognised for their pioneering work in advanced materials and manufacturing. Materials research includes the development of novel alloys and composites.

At our state of the art manufacturing research facilities we research machining, welding, structural health, casting, and digital manufacturing processes for aerospace, marine and land applications. Through facilities like the Royce Discovery Centre, Defence Materials Centre of Excellence (DMEx)Laboratory for Verification and Validation (LVV) and industrial collaborations with defence primes and SME’s, we enable the creation of stronger, lighter, and more resilient materials for high-performance applications.

Communications and Networks

Our researchers are advancing communications technologies, including work on 6G, mm wave, cyber-security, quantum, semiconductors and high-performance antennas. This research aims to provide ultra-reliable, secure, and high-speed communications for critical applications, building on the University’s strengths in electronic and electrical engineering and physics.

Air Systems

The University’s expertise in aerodynamics, additive manufacturing, composites, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) and structural health monitoring supports the safety and performance of air systems. Our partnerships with global aerospace companies foster innovation in lightweight structures and real-time diagnostics.

AI and Data Systems

As a partner of the Alan Turing Institute and a leader in machine intelligence, Sheffield’s research in artificial intelligence and data analytics is transforming decision-making and operations in defence. Our work explores predictive analytics, computer vision, virtual and augmented reality, robotics and ethical AI.

Blast Research

Sheffield’s expertise in civil and structural engineering includes research into blast resistance and impact modelling. By designing materials and structures that mitigate explosive forces, we are improving the resilience and safety of infrastructure in high-risk scenarios.

Sensors

Our researchers are advancing sensor technologies, including innovations in acoustic, thermal, photonic and quantum sensors. These systems are critical for improving detection, monitoring, and situational awareness in a range of defence and security contexts.

Autonomy

Sheffield leads in autonomous systems research, particularly in computer vision, robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), multi-sensor perception, and machine learning. These technologies enable applications such as detection, tracking, and navigation for defence and security operations.

Policy and Governance

Beyond technical innovation, Sheffield academics are shaping policy through research into governance, ethics, and regulation. By exploring the societal impacts of new technologies, we help guide responsible development in defence.

Through these diverse capabilities, the University of Sheffield plays a pivotal role in supporting and advancing the UK's defence and security sectors.
