Why did you decide to study abroad?
I thought it was such an incredible opportunity, I couldn't pass it up! Getting to move to another country for a year, meet new people from all over the world, and experience a new society and culture were some of the main reasons motivating me. Especially as a history student, getting the chance to study history somewhere like Berlin was so exciting.
What were your top 3 highlights whilst studying abroad?
Getting to travel! So far I have been to Prague, Cologne, Geneva and even interrailed around Italy during the holiday. Also, meeting lots of new people from all over the world. I'm so lucky to have made some amazing friends and have learnt lots about their own cultures too. Finally, having new experiences. This one is quite broad, but true! Seeing the Berlin Festival of lights, getting to learn a new language, seeing the famous German Christmas markets are just a few examples of this.
What would you say to someone who was unsure about spending a period abroad?
Go for it! I know it is a big and daunting decision, but it is so worthwhile. For me, I was also unsure about studying abroad, and it was a big step out of my comfort zone. Ultimately, I decided that it was an opportunity that I would regret passing up. How often are you going to get the chance to study in another country? I'm so happy I took the leap of faith, as although it was a big step out of my comfort zone, it has now made me much more confident in myself and my abilities, and I have experienced so many amazing new things.
What is the one thing you wish you'd known before you left?
Not to compare myself to others. My university only started in late October, so by the time I left a lot of my friends going abroad and those staying in Sheffield had started University. On social media it looked like everybody was having a great time, and I put pressure on myself to have the best time when I moved. I was worried that I was missing out on things in Sheffield, but also worried about not making the most of my year abroad. Once I stopped doing this I was much happier. I have had the most amazing year and its made me so happy, regardless of what others were doing. Doing a year abroad has made me much more confident in myself and I wish I hadn't been as worried about it before moving - it all turned out amazing.
For students who will be arriving in Sheffield, what are your top recommendations for things to do and see in Sheffield?
The parks and green spaces would definitely be at the top of my list! The peak district is so easy to get to and its truly beautiful. Western Park, Crookes Valley Park and the Botanical Gardens are also a few of my favourite places in Sheffield. There are lots of places to eat but a few favourites are Nam Song, Cutlery Works and Falafel King. Division street has some amazing cafes on as well. There are also activities like Golf Fang, Lane 7 bowling, the Treehouse Boardgame café and many more that are great fun. I would definitely recommend joining a society as it is a great way to try new things and meet new people too.
