If I could speak to my past self, I'd reassure them that everything will work out and they're going to have the most amazing year of their life.

Why did you decide to study abroad?
My year abroad in South Korea was a significant part of my Korean Studies degree journey, during which I spent nine months attending Sungkyunkwan University. The main goal was to improve my Korean language skills to an advanced level. Nevertheless, it was also a highly rewarding experience that completely transformed my university journey. A year abroad can be a truly special, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
What were your top three highlights whilst studying abroad?
Making friends and creating unforgettable memories: Making friends from all over the world. Late-night karaoke sessions, going to theme parks, and attending festivals are just a few of the incredible memories I have made with my friends. And thanks to my friends, I had an unforgettable year abroad experience.
Discovering hidden gems with my camera: I made the most of my free time, discovering new parts of the city. Suwon and Seoul were so picturesque that they made the ideal setting for me to take pictures and capture student life in South Korea. Having a second place to take photos completed my year abroad experience.
Never-ending things to do: Whether it was going to a live street performance, taking an art class, or just strolling through the busy food or craft markets, there was always something new to do. I enjoyed the sense of having an entire city to explore, with each neighbourhood introducing different and exciting things to do.
What would you say to someone unsure about spending a period abroad?
Feeling nervous or uncertain about spending a year abroad is completely natural. I was also apprehensive and even thought about not going ahead with it. But I'm so happy I stuck with it and completed the year abroad. By the end of my year abroad, I felt as if South Korea had become my second home. I was quite comfortable and happy. And, if I could speak to my past self, I would reassure them that everything will work out and that they are going to have one of the most amazing years of their lives.
What is the one thing you wish you had known before you left?
How true the feeling of homesickness is at the start of the year abroad! Before I left, I was told about homesickness, but I honestly believed, 'That won't happen to me'. However, I was mistaken about that. So, be ready for it. Feeling a little homesick, especially in the beginning, is quite normal. My advice would be to bring something that reminds you of home and a few of your favourite comfort snacks - I really missed salty crisps. Also, make sure to keep in touch with friends and/or family. Staying connected really does make a big difference.
