Why did you decide to study abroad?

I decided to study abroad to push myself out of my comfort zone and to experience something truly unique. It's such an unparalleled experience to completely immerse yourself in another country's culture by studying in one of its institutions.

How did you adapt to life in a different country?

In the United States, I interacted with such a wide range of people. Adapting to this environment, such as the food and drinking culture, tipping culture and a completely different educational system, was challenging, but the lack of academic pressure from a pass/fail year allows you to learn and adapt without lots of worry.

What were your top three highlights whilst studying abroad?

  1. During the presidential election in 2024, I got to hear Obama speak in a political campaign.

  2. Celebrating the Eagles winning the Super Bowl in Philadelphia.

  3. Visiting New York many times with family and friends who came to visit, but also other international students.

What did you gain from your year abroad and placement that might help in your future career?

I think a year abroad shows an employer that you have the confidence and initiative to do things by yourself. I also think it helped with my self-belief that I could navigate difficult situations, as I literally moved to a different country and lived there for a year.

What would you say to someone unsure about spending a period abroad?

I haven't really spoken to anyone who hasn't enjoyed being abroad. There are challenges (mostly with admin stuff), but they are so worth the fun experiences and stories. People are often worried about their fourth year, whether any of their friends will still be there. I would say you will be surprised how many people stay on from a master's or year abroad or placement too!

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you left the UK to study abroad?

Never say no to any opportunities or group trips because you're never going to be in that moment in time, place or with those new friends ever again.
