In brief:

  • One in six people will develop a neurological condition, and 55 million live with dementia - these numbers are rising, and we urgently need to accelerate our work towards a cure
  • Sheffield is a neurodegenerative research world-leader; expanding our cutting-edge SITraN facility will forever change the lives of millions, and your support will get us there
  • Pioneering gene therapy studies at our GTIMC hub, along with the Florey Institute's groundbreaking work on antimicrobial resistance, will further increase our global healthcare impact

A race against time

Incurable illnesses like motor neuron disease (MND), Parkinson’s, dementia and multiple sclerosis (MS) represent one of the most pressing global public health challenges we face today. These unbearably cruel conditions are notoriously hard to treat and the race to discover more effective therapies has never been more urgent.

Sheffield is truly leading the fight, pushing the boundaries of conventional research to foster real and meaningful progress towards an eventual cure.

CASE Study: Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN)

Sheffield’s pioneering SITraN facility hosts some of the most talented medical researchers on the planet, all working from a single building towards a shared goal: developing game-changing therapies for patients living with neurological disease.

A renowned centre of excellence

Since 2010, SITraN has established itself as a global pioneer in the fight against incurable neurological disease. But in part due to its great success, the facility is facing chronic pressures and is operating beyond capacity, delaying advancements.

It's only with your help that important breakthroughs will happen sooner, because patients and their families can't wait.

Hope for the future

Now it’s time to take the next leap forward and accelerate progress and bring hope to patients all over the world.

Plans for a world-class sister facility alongside the existing SITraN building will double capacity, expanding drug discovery programmes and drastically increasing the pace of future advancements. Supported by cutting-edge equipment and leading researchers in neuroimaging, we’ll use cell and gene therapies to accelerate cures for conditions like MND.

Support SITraN's expansion

“I’m confident that SITraN will be the place where a cure for MND is found. A landmark discovery means we’re close to developing a treatment that could help patients with the most common genetic type of MND. But we desperately need more lab space to do this vital work.

Together, we can accelerate breakthroughs

We’re on the threshold of some extraordinary breakthroughs. It’s critical that we grow the existing research centre to deliver its full potential. But we can't do it alone.

A passionate community of fundraisers and donors have already supported SITraN's expansion, becoming part of Sheffield's mission to make conditions like MND history. Help ensure patients with devastating conditions are cured, not just cared for, by making a gift or taking on your own fundraising challenge today.
