Nominated were Dr Robert Moorehead, from the School of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering, in the Contribution to Knowledge Exchange category; Andy Patrick from the Schools of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering, in the Contribution to Infrastructure and Facilities category; and Jon Fullwood, from Multidisciplinary Engineering Education for the Contribution to Teaching award.

In total, 328 nominations were submitted for the only UK awards dedicated to celebrating technical excellence and innovation in higher education and research.

Ten awards – including two new categories Apprentice and Sustainability - will be presented at the UK Higher Education Technicians Summit (HETS), taking place on Wednesday 9 July 2025 at the Leonardo Conference Centre in Leicestershire.

The Papin Prizes have continued to raise the visibility and recognition of technical professionals for the last decade.

Jon Fullwood, Technical Team Leader in Computing, Control and Electrical Engineering, said: “I’m extremely surprised, but absolutely delighted to have been nominated for this award. This would not have been possible without the help and support of an exceptional team of people. The Computing, Control and Electrical Engineering (CCEE) technical team in The Diamond deserve a very special thank you from me.”

Andy Patrick, Workshop Supervisor, said: “It’s really nice to be recognised for what you do by your peers.”

Kevin Corke, Faculty Director of Operations, said: “It is great to see Robert, Andy and Jon being shortlisted for the Papin prize and are thoroughly deserved. Our technical staff play an important role in the faculties work and these nominations help recognise the impact our technicians play in our research and teaching activities.”

HETS 2025 is sponsored by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and Midlands Innovation. The Excellence in Sustainability award is sponsored by SocEnv.

Dr Kelly Vere MBE, Director for The UK Institute for Technical Skills & Strategy and Technician Commitment Programme Lead said: “Many congratulations to all individuals and teams who have been nominated and thank you to the colleagues who took their time to nominate to raise the profile and status of technicians within the sector.

“The Papin Prizes recognise and celebrate the very best technical staff across the UK. Because the submissions are invited from people who work with technical staff, they also increase recognition and visibility of technicians,” she explained.

Shortlisted submissions will be reviewed by the Midlands Innovation Executive Management Group, comprising of Pro-Vice-Chancellors.
