Engineering at Sheffield subjects ranked in top 10 in The Guardian University Guide 2025 and The Mail University Guide 2025

Engineering subjects at the University of Sheffield have been ranked amongst some of the best, with both published in September.

The Guardian University Guide has established itself as a key league table for UK universities and ranks universities on a number of criteria; including student satisfaction scores based on courses, teaching and feedback, as well as the proportion of graduates in employment or further study after graduation.

In addition, the guide ranks by subject area, and scored engineering subjects at Sheffield within the top 10 places to study for:

  • Aerospace Engineering (3rd)
  • Civil Engineering (5th)
  • Computer Science and Information Systems (9th)
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering (6th)
    (includes our Mechatronics, Robotics & Computer Systems Engineering courses)
  • General Engineering (5th)
    (includes our Materials Science and Engineering and Biomedical Engineering courses)
  • Mechanical Engineering (4th)

The Guardian University Guide 2025 ranked the University of Sheffield within the top 10 in the UK for 12 subject areas including: construction, surveying and planning; civil engineering; nursing;  journalism; architecture and zoology.

The University of Sheffield rose one place from last year to be ranked 20th best University in the UK out of 122 institutions.

In addition, The Mail University Guide 2025 ranked Sheffield engineering programmes as:

  • Aeronautical and aerospace engineering (4th)
  • Bioengineering, medical and biomedical engineering (2nd)
  • Civil engineering (1st)
    Computer science (3rd)
  • Electrical and electronic engineering (6th)
  • Mechanical engineering (1st)

The Mail league table ranks universities on performance measures that include the proportion of graduates in highly-skilled jobs and the salaries they earn, degree outcomes, research quality and research income. It has placed Sheffield in the top 10 universities in the UK, as well as top in the North of England for the second successive year. Sheffield is ranked the highest in the Russell Group for student support and is behind only Oxford and Cambridge for student assessment of the quality of their teaching.
