Electric dreams: Sheffield Formula Racing team fuels one young fan’s championship dreams

The University’s student-led racing team, Sheffield Formula Racing (SFR), recently welcomed local electric go-karting talent Jacob Hutchinson for a behind-the-scenes look at their 2026 Challenger SFR17 campaign.

Jacob connected with SFR’s lead driver for a hands-on look at their inaugural electric car as the squad prepares for the upcoming season. The team, driven by a mission to share expertise and mentor young racers, saw this as the ideal moment to compare notes, share technical knowledge and champion their shared vision for a sustainable racing future.

Diagnosed with Autism and ADHD at age five, 12-year-old Jacob has truly found his lane in karting. Since launching his competitive journey in 2023, Jacob has already hit significant milestones on track. Now, he’s racing toward a professional career, hoping his story proves to other neurodivergent children that with the right mindset and support, no obstacle is too great to overcome.

Looking ahead, the team plans to reunite with Jacob once testing begins. The goal is to bring his kart trackside for a joint session, offering a unique opportunity to see both electric machines running in tandem.

Jacob said: “The team has shown me that there is more to motorsport and that at university, I can continue and expand my passion while gaining a degree if that is something I decide to pursue. My one big goal, however, is to race globally in the future hopefully as a driver, but if that is not possible as one of the engineering team.”

Paul Hutchinson, Jacob’s dad, said: “Karting has had a hugely positive impact on Jacob’s confidence, emotional regulation, and social skills. What began as a hobby has become something he is deeply committed to. He proudly carries the ADHD butterfly symbol on his helmet as a sign of determination and pride in being neurodiverse.

This season is a major milestone for Jacob as he debuts in his own kart and after a fantastic experience meeting the team, we’re eager to follow the car’s journey from the revision stage all the way to its first laps on the track.”

Tobias Smith, Technical Director at Sheffield Formula Racing, said: “Bringing Jacob into the workshop was about more than just showing off the car; it was about showing a young talent how passion and collaboration fuel motorsport. We take great pride in fostering that spirit of innovation - a mission that is only achievable thanks to the continued backing of partners like ACCU.”
