Principal Fellowship of the HEA recognises a sustained record of effective strategic leadership in academic practice and academic development as a key contribution to high quality student learning.

Dr Matteo Di Benedetti, Deputy Director of the Centre for Engineering Education and Senior University Teacher in Multidisciplinary Engineering Education, was recognised for his transformative contributions to empowering educators at all levels—from Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) to senior academics—by championing self-reflection, knowledge sharing, and professional growth.

Matteo founded the Research and Scholarship Group within the Centre for Engineering Education, elevating scholarship as a central element in engineering education and enabling over 40 colleagues to develop and share best practices. He led the introduction of an innovative GTA training framework, enhancing teaching quality, supporting GTAs in gaining HEA recognition, and resulting in consistently improved student learning experiences.

Additionally, Matteo’s international collaborations, including the Scholarship Exchange Programme and workshops for educators across Europe, have strengthened the University’s reputation as a leader in engineering education. His ongoing contributions to pedagogical research, professional development, and inclusive policies have enriched our institution and advanced educational practices across the wider academic community.

I am honoured to be recognised as a Principal Fellow, marking a significant milestone in my commitment to advancing scholarship in engineering education and empowering Graduate Teaching Assistants in their teaching development. I am grateful for the support of my colleagues and mentors, whose collaborative spirit and dedication to student-centred learning continue to inspire my work.
