What's happening this month

The new building will be located opposite the Information Commons, close to Hounsfield Road, Leavygreave Road and Upper Hanover Street. As work progresses, this page will explain what is happening on site, what people nearby may notice, and how access, parking, traffic or pedestrian routes may be affected.

We will update this page as the project moves through site preparation, demolition, construction and fit-out. This will include information about noisy works, contractor movements, changes to routes around the site, tree works, safety measures and key construction milestones.

Where possible, we will include a marked-up site plan so staff, students and visitors can see which areas are affected and how to move around the site safely.

Latest update - August 2026

Site preparation is due to begin in late August on the area opposite the Information Commons.

The first phase of work will include setting up the contractor compound and preparing for demolition of disused University-owned buildings on Hounsfield Road. These buildings need to be removed to clear the site for the new teaching facility.

What you may notice

People using the area may notice:

• fencing and hoardings being installed around the site
• contractors working on and around Hounsfield Road
• increased vehicle movements and deliveries
• some noise and dust during demolition works
• changes to parking and access around the site

Parking changes

The IT Services car park will close so it can be used as a contractor compound during the works.

We know this will affect some colleagues who use the area, and further information about parking arrangements will be shared directly with those affected where needed.

Access around the site

Pedestrian routes around the site will be maintained wherever possible, but there may be temporary changes as work progresses.

We will update this page with any confirmed changes to routes around Hounsfield Road, Leavygreave Road and nearby areas.

Noise, dust and disruption

Some noise and dust is expected during demolition and preparation works. The project team will work with contractors to manage disruption and reduce impacts where possible.

Further information will be shared with nearby building users, including colleagues in Hicks, the Computing Centre, the Information Commons and the BNBR Centre.

Safety around the site

Please follow any signage, barriers and instructions from contractors while work is taking place.

Construction sites can change quickly, so please avoid entering restricted areas or walking close to site vehicles unless directed to do so.
