Tourism Chinese
This course is ideal for keen travellers with their sights set on China. It covers essential vocabulary for ordering food, shopping, asking for directions, common expressions at airports and hotels, and talking about tourist attractions. By the end of the course, students will be able to converse with locals at a basic level. They will also develop cultural awareness, learning fixed phrases in carefully selected contexts to help manage the risks of miscommunication.
Duration: 6 weeks, 2 hours per evening on Tuesdays (Beginning Tuesday 11 June).

Business Chinese
This course focuses on pragmatic workplace communication including greetings, making business appointments, hosting a work meal, job interview conversations and a case study of miscommunication. The learning experience is enhanced with a guest speaker session from the local Chinese business community. We use a mixture of textbooks informed by contemporary research on workplace language needs in China. We also offer personalised advice on language progression tailored to each student’s industry and needs. Furthermore our team will endeavour to be at hand to help with inquiries to accommodate busy schedules.
Duration: 6 weeks, 2 hours per evening, once a week on Mondays (Beginning Monday 10 June).

Sheffield Chinese
This course teaches Chinese as it is used in the Steel City, prioritising local language encounters. It introduces Mandarin Chinese with vocabulary relating to Sheffield, enabling students to engage in real life conversations, whilst learning common language patterns. By taking the course, participants will pick up frequently used Chinese expressions related to Sheffield and the University of Sheffield and beyond. The course will equip them with the ability to form questions, compare things or describe objects, and ultimately adopt the linguistic logic to produce simple, coherent texts on familiar topics.
Sheffield Chinese is suitable for beginners and upwards who wish to explore Mandarin Chinese learning, gain insight into the connection between Sheffield and China,. Participants will develop basic knowledge of the sound system, written symbols, grammatical patterns, and most frequently used words in written and spoken texts that traditional textbooks overlook.
Duration: 6 weeks, 2 hours per evening, once a week on Thursdays (Beginning Thursday 13 June).

Chinese Calligraphy
Viewed in China as the highest art form, surpassing painting, sculpture and poetry, Chinese calligraphy is a highly spontaneous and individualistic art.
This beginners’ course is guided by an experienced teacher, and covers Chinese calligraphy strokes, connectedness, spacing, and coherence. Students will learn the history and context of the art form, explore the origins of writing and the most popular styles, and watch illuminating videos on calligraphy. The course concludes with an outdoor session allowing students to practise calligraphy in the refined beauty of Chinese and English gardens. By the end of the course, participants will be able to examine a word, form a perception, and produce a visual representation.
Duration: 6 weeks, 2 hours per evening, once a week on Wednesdays (Beginning Wednesday 12 June).
