Profile

I have been working on polymers and polymer composites since joining the department in 2005. My primary research interest is in developing structure property relationships in epoxy resins and other thermosets. Previously I developed Group Interaction Modelling (GIM) to predict the thermo-mechanical properties of polymers ranging from thermoplastics to thermosets. Prior to this I worked at the University of Durham and ICI.

Qualifications

BSc Chemistry, University of York (1994)

PhD Computational Chemistry, University of Cardiff (1997)

Research interests
  • Structure property relationships in amine cured epoxy resins
  • Influence of epoxy and amine isomer structure on epoxy resin properties
  • Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) of polymers (low temperature transitions)
  • Cure monitoring in epoxy resins (NIR, DEA)
  • Factors influencing fracture toughness in thermosets
  • Structure property relationships in anhydride cured epoxy resins
  • Influence of flexibilizing and fortifying reactive additives on epoxy resins
  • Influence of epoxy matrix structure on composite properties and processing (VARTM)
