The whole SURE experience really helped me gain a deep insight into the inner workings of a laboratory
I initially found out about the Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) scheme from the 301 website, and thought that it looked like an amazing opportunity, and I was really excited when I got the chance to work with Dr. Anne-Gaelle Borycki, and also my friend, who was working on the same project.
My project involved investigating mice muscle regeneration after injury, which had a specific receptor called Patched removed from their cells.
The project we were doing would feed into a larger body of work, investigating a rare cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma, which affects skeletal muscle.

Over the summer, I spent my days in the laboratory learning various techniques, which I had previously only learnt about in lectures throughout my course.
It was really interesting, and the best part was a lot of the experiments we ran independently, and I was in charge of managing my own time, and ensuring everything was ready for the experiments I needed to do.
It was also really gratifying when the images turned out well and we got some really good images!
The whole SURE experience really helped me gain a deep insight into the inner workings of a laboratory, and allowed me to work on my problem solving skills, and also made me more confident about lab work.
The placement also helped me decide to pursue the integrated Masters course. Overall, I really enjoyed the SURE experience and I would thoroughly recommend it!
