Congratulations on securing your place to study Midwiferywith us this September. On this page you’ll find useful information and tasks to help make your transition to the University of Sheffield as smooth as possible.
We know this can be a busy time for you, and we want to make preparing to start your course as straightforward as possible. This pre-arrival page is for new MSc Midwifery students starting in September 2025. Here you’ll find information and tasks to complete specific to you and your course.

Welcome Week timetable
This year Welcome Week takes place on week commencing Monday 22 September.
Throughout the week there'll be lots of events to help you explore the campus and city, make friends, and find out how the university can support you. Information about University-wide activities will be shared with you directly in the run-up to Welcome Week.
During Welcome Week, we’ll also be holding important sessions and activities to introduce you to the MSc Midwifery programme.
- Monday 22 September
9am - 12.30pm, Bartolome House EG13 - meet the team, introduction to programme, placement choices
1pm, Bartolome House DB13 - personal safety
1.30pm - 4pm, around campus - orientation exercise
- Tuesday 23 September
9.30am - 11am, Bartolome House DB13 - Introduction to online services (BlackBoard, Google site and Clinicalskills.net). Please bring your laptops to this session.
11am - 12pm, Bartolome House EG13 - Library services (Online resources) and 301 Academic Skills Centre
1pm - 4pm, Bartolome House EG13 - RCM Terri Mason
- Wednesday 24 September
9.30am - 1pm - ELTC, wellbeing and the Disability and Dyslexia Support Service (DDSS)
1pm - 4pm - RCM talk and introduction to Unit 3
Thursday 25 September and Friday 26 September are available for you to dedicate to Fresher's activities.
Any changes to your Welcome Week timetable will be communicated to you by the MSc Midwifery team.

You will have received an email explaining these processes. It is important that you complete these tasks as soon as possible to make your placements run smoothly. Please follow the links in the email.

The resources below are not required reading, but may be useful if you'd like to familiarise yourself with the course content and the wider context surrounding midwifery.
'MBRRACE-UK' is a collaboration appointed by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) to run the national Maternal, Newborn and Infant clinical Outcome Review Programme (MNI-CORP), which conducts surveillance and investigates the causes of maternal deaths, stillbirths and infant deaths across England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Island, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.
Mayes’ Midwifery is a core text for student midwives in the UK. The text covers all the main aspects of midwifery in detail, including the various stages of pregnancy, possible complexities around childbirth, and psychological and social considerations related to women’s health. It provides the most recent evidence along with detailed anatomy and physiology information, and how these translate into practice.
Written by midwives for midwives, Myles Textbook for Midwives has been the seminal textbook of midwifery for over 60 years. It offers comprehensive coverage of topics fundamental to 21st midwifery practice.
