We are delighted to welcome you to the BMedSci in Orthoptics. On this page, you'll find a list of important dates and resources to prepare you for the course. This page will be updated with the latest information as it is made available.

Welcome Week

This year, Welcome Week takes place from Monday 23 September to Saturday 28 September 2024. Throughout the week there'll be lots of events across campus, to help you explore the campus and city, make friends, and find out how the university can support you. Information about University-wide activities will be shared with you directly in the run-up to Welcome Week.

During Welcome Week, we’ll also be holding important course and School activities to introduce you to the BMedSci Orthoptics programme and the School of Allied Health Professions, Nursing and Midwifery. This timetable is provisional and subject to change. Any changes will be communicated to you by the BMedSci Orthoptics team.

Monday 23rd September

Introductory welcome meeting

This is a chance to meet the Orthoptics teaching staff, your academic tutor, and your fellow orthoptics students.

Tuesday 24th September

OPH103 Introductory digital learning

11am - 1pm

Wednesday 25th September

Occupational Health immunisation

Only students who have submitted their Occupational Health questionnaire AND have had confirmation of their fitness to start the course from Occupational Health can attend their immunisation appointments.  Students will receive confirmation of their immunisation appointment date/time via a text directly from Occupational Health. Students who have not completed their OH questionnaire - or who have completed it, but their information is still being assessed by OH - they cannot commence their immunisations.

Please take ID with you to your appointment (i.e. Ucard)

Student orthoptic society introduction

This session is for all three year groups of the BMedSci Orthoptics course to meet and learn more about the orthoptic society and the events they have planned for the upcoming year.

Thursday 26th September

Health Sciences Library tour

10am - 11am:
Group 1: 10.00 - 10.15 am 
Group 2: 10.15 - 10.30 am 
Group 3: 10.30 - 10.45 am

Group numbers for tours will be allocated during Welcome Week.

Medical School (meet at the back of the cafe area, by the entrance to the Health Sciences Library)


Course calendar

Once you have completed registration and attended your introductory meeting, you’ll be given access to a Google Calendar, which includes your module timetabling for the year, including room allocations.

Please note that calendar entries are subject to change, and any changes will be communicated to you via email and updated on the Google calendar.

A programme handbook for our BMedSci Orthoptics course will be available the week before Welcome Week. Please bookmark this page, as we will upload the handbook here when it's available.


Meet the team

We're delighted to welcome you to study Orthoptics at Sheffield this September. We're a close-knit team of academic and research staff, and during your time here you'll get to know the team and your fellow students really well. University of Sheffield Orthoptics Society

The University of Sheffield Orthoptics Society is a student-run society that supports BMedSci Orthoptics students across all three years of our programme. They organise social events throughout the year, including the Eyeball, which is a fabulous black-tie event.
