Joining the University of Sheffield has allowed me to meet so many of my closest friends
What made you want to work in healthcare, and why did you decide to train as a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) specifically?
“I wanted to help people live their life to the fullest; speech and language therapy helps to do this through rehabilitation and intervention for a range of people which is one of the reasons to train. Having the opportunity to work with clients as young as neonatal all the way through to palliative care and support them to achieve their goals is so rewarding. SLT has many different avenues to explore such as eating, drinking and swallowing, the justice system, oncology and transgender voice work, so there is always something interesting to learn.”
What drew you to the University of Sheffield's SLT programme?
“I loved that the lecturers are really supportive and provide lots of resources to make the modules - which can appear intimidating at the beginning - a lot more achievable.
“Sheffield’s SLT programme also has a holistic view of the clients we see. Many of the modules have some overlap, and they always draw back to clinical examples which make the learning very relevant. Additionally, the in-house clinic - where I’ve had the opportunity to work in the Aphasia clinic - is fabulous. The people that attend are so lovely and it creates a great opportunity for mutual learning between the students and clients. The staff that run it are very supportive and knowledgeable on how to be a confident communicator using supportive strategies.”
What have you enjoyed most about studying at Sheffield so far?
“Sheffield is a brilliant city with the opportunity to try so many new hobbies and get stuck in. I have loved taking on the responsibility of joining my course’s committee as Sports Officer and starting up a new netball team. Providing an opportunity for SLT students across the year groups to meet and play in a relaxed setting has been very rewarding. As well, being able to raise money for charities so close to our course has been brilliant as we can witness the direct impact the funding provides.
“Joining the University of Sheffield has allowed me to meet so many of my closest friends both on my course and through societies and accommodation - I am very grateful.”
What has been your favourite placement so far and why?
“My favourite placement so far would have to be in a mainstream primary school. This was a brilliant opportunity for my placement partner and I to gain autonomy in a clinical session."
This was a brilliant opportunity for my placement partner and I to gain autonomy in a clinical session. We were able to independently deliver both assessment and intervention to a range of children and start to grow the SLT skillset of transcription and dynamic assessment while - most importantly - keeping the session engaging.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying SLT at university?
“Go for it! It has genuinely been one of the best decisions I have made. The range of formats for assessment being a mix of assignments and exams is great, the teaching is accessible and engaging and the placement team secure so many rewarding placements in a range of specialities.”
