What drew you to the MMedSci Vision and Strabismus at Sheffield?

“The topic of strabismus has been particularly close to my heart for many years. When I discovered that the University of Sheffield was the only institution in the world offering a dedicated programme in this field, I dreamed of becoming part of the MMedSci Vision and Strabismus community.

“For a long time, I hesitated to apply, fearing that I might not meet the academic demands of the individual modules, despite having already completed other masters studies and optometry training. However, my passion for orthoptics and my curiosity about strabismus and ophthalmology ultimately overcame my fears. One night, I finally submitted my application. Fortunately, I was accepted into the programme, for which I am immensely grateful.”

What did you enjoy most about the course?

“The three years of study were incredibly interesting and fulfilling for me. I chose the modules that were most useful for my professional practice: Concomitant and Incomitance, Insight into Disease, Eye to Vision, and Research.

“I found the course materials and literature within each unit to be highly valuable. Keeping a study journal was also a meaningful experience, as it allowed me to analyse the topics in even greater depth. The greatest joy for me was constantly expanding my knowledge, based on the latest scientific research. Thanks to this, I feel confident that my expertise is up-to-date and rooted in evidence-based medicine (EBM).

“What also deserves recognition is the incredibly kind and supportive approach of the entire faculty and staff at Sheffield. At every stage of my studies, I could rely on the support of the programme leader, Dr. Charlotte Codina, as well as the tutors. I am immensely grateful for this, especially since my time in the programme coincided with a difficult period in my life, and I could always count on their understanding and help."

The respectful and warm treatment of students was truly exceptional. I have never experienced it to such an extent at any other university, despite having completed four other degrees. I also greatly valued the opportunity for online meetings, discussions with fellow students, and, importantly, the ability to choose the modules that interested me the most.”

How has the course helped you in your job as an orthoptist?

“I run my own practice in Cracow (Poland), which specialises in neuro-orthoptics. I am primarily a practitioner but also a lecturer. I collaborate with many ophthalmologists, strabologists, orthoptists, and optometrists, for whom I conduct courses and lectures. Additionally, I am a board member of the Polish Orthoptic Association of prof. K. Krzystkowa.

“Completing my studies in Vision and Strabismus has allowed me to enhance my professional skills and has also given me greater confidence when participating in scientific conferences in English. Being a graduate of this prestigious university is a continuous source of pride for me, motivating further academic work and inspiring others with my passion for orthoptics and ophthalmology.”

How did you find studying by distance learning?

“Studying from home was a very convenient way for me to expand my knowledge. First, during the pandemic when I was enrolled it was the only safe learning option. Second, distance learning reduced the cost of my studies and allowed me to deepen my knowledge at a time that suited me best. As someone who works intensively, averaging nine hours a day, and as a self-learner who prefers studying at night, this was the best available way to develop my professional skills.”

Do you have any tips or advice for anyone thinking about taking the course?

“I highly recommend the MMedSci Vision and Strabismus programme at the University of Sheffield. My advice to both current and future students is: believe in yourself and follow your passion. Self-discipline and a strong foundational knowledge are also crucial. This programme does not teach orthoptics from scratch so you need to have a solid base, which will then be expanded and applied in a practical context.

“Additionally, be prepared to dedicate regular study time, averaging 8-10 hours per week. You should also enjoy reading scientific articles and drawing conclusions on your own and don’t expect everything to be handed to you on a plate. Satisfaction guaranteed!”
