Professor AbdouMaliq Simone will give a keynote lecture drawing on his work on black urbanisms and the changing dynamics of urban inhabitation and the urban technical.

That which is not decided: the edges of black urbanities

Our technical imagination still is firmly linked to the additive, to what new knowledge and tools can be brought to the table. When, the more relevant challenge, perhaps, is how to bring things to an end; how to subtract from the world the obsession with maximizing, to subtract the search for status and recognition, and rather live as unrecognized and inoperable, or rather, on the edge.

If engaged as method, how does blackness circumvent both the anchoring of relationality in any predeterminate overarching sense of attachment, and those fantasies that everything is tied together in some supra-positional subject or subsuming ecology, which stereotypically characterize certain strands of Anthropocene thought?
