Colleagues across Social Sciences were among those honoured for their exceptional achievements and the far-reaching impact of their collaborations in the University's second annual Knowledge Exchange and Impact Awards.

Colleagues across Social Sciences were among those honoured for their exceptional achievements and the far-reaching impact of their collaborations with partners at local, national and international levels in the University's second annual Knowledge Exchange and Impact Awards.

Held at the Engineering Heartspace and Mappin Hall earlier this month, the awards celebrated colleagues from academia and professional services whose innovative collaborations with external partners have delivered tangible and lasting benefits to the wider world.

The ceremony, hosted by Dr Tori Herridge, celebrated a total of 14 winners across eight categories, including special Early Career Researcher (ECR) awards for researchers at an earlier stage in their research careers.  From Social Sciences the winners were:

  • Dr Ryan Bramley, from the School of Education was overall and ECR winner in the 'Outstanding partnership or impact in creativity/culture/society' category for his project Animating Inclusion: Rethinking Subtitles for Deaf Audiences. 

  • Dr Xavier L’Hoiry, from the School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations, was the winner in the 'Outstanding partnership or impact in policy/public services/law' category, for the project Tackling Sex Trafficking Online.
     
  • Dr Pamela Richardson, from the School of Geography and Planning, was the ECR winner in the 'Outstanding partnership or impact in sustainability and the environment' category for the project Make it Grow.
     
  • Dr Will Mason, from the School of Education, was joint winner in the 'Outstanding partnership or impact in a local or regional capacity' category for the project CiviAct: Reimagining ‘Community-Led’.
     

Also shortlisted from the Faculty was:
 

  •  Dr Rob Bryant,  from the School of Geography and Planning, in the 'Outstanding partnership or impact in sustainability and the environment' category, for his work on the Policing of Illegal Selective Logging in the Amazon.

Professor Ashutosh Tiwari, Deputy Vice-President for Innovation at the University of Sheffield, said: "Congratulations to all our winners whose innovative collaborations with partners exemplify our commitment to delivering far-reaching and lasting impact to the wider world. A special mention for the winners from our early career researcher community, whose excellent work clearly demonstrates the bright future of knowledge exchange and impact activity at our University. Congratulations too to our professional services winners, whose creativity, specialist support and expertise are instrumental to our many knowledge exchange and impact successes.

“We have designed these awards to underscore that our work is a truly collaborative undertaking, and to reaffirm our commitment to continuously growing and strengthening our impact, knowledge exchange and innovation activity. The quality of the submissions was uniformly high and, collectively, offer a brilliant snapshot of innovation activity across our University.
