The Faculty of Science Research Prize Scholarship
The University is committed to increasing opportunities in doctoral research for students who are currently under-represented in our postgraduate research student population by offering five fully funded scholarships across the University.
Who can apply?
Within the Faculty of Science, there is one scholarship available for a 2024/25 entry and is inviting applications from UK National, classified as ‘Home’ for tuition fee purposes candidates who are:
- Black or Black British (of African or Caribbean heritage)
- Asian or Asian British (of Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Indian heritage)
- multiple ethnic background including one of the ethnicity groups listed above
What will the scholarship include?
- UK (home) tuition fees for 3.5 years
- A UKRI stipend for 3.5 years (currently £18,622 per year tax free for 2023/24)
- A Research, Training and Support Grant (RTSG) for 3.5 years towards research costs and training
- A budget for reasonable projects costs (where these fall outside of the RTSG)
The scholarship is also offered on a part time basis for 7 years. Part time scholarships are paid at 50% of the full time rate.
Eligibility
- You should have, or expect to achieve, a first or upper second class UK honours degree or equivalent, and meet any other entry requirements stipulated by your chosen department.
- You should be applying to start your first year of study on a full-time or part-time PhD in the 2024/25 academic year.
The scholarships are open to applicants who have received an offer to study on any programme that does not come with an attached funding package (studentship), including self-proposed projects.

How to apply
All applicants are required to complete the following:
- An application via the Postgraduate Online Application Form.
- The additional 'Scholarship Application' section of the Postgraduate Online Application Form. This section of the form is only accessible to those who select a PhD start date of 1 September 2024 or later.
- A declaration form and upload it to their application.
Applicants must select a start date of no earlier than 1st September 2024. Current offer holders with a start date of September 2024 or later will be able to log back into their study applications to access the scholarship form.
