Description
Celebrate World Sea Turtle Day with a free screening of the new documentary Torti: Eggsploring Solutions for the Turtle Extinction Crisis. Created by Seychelles-based cinematographer Stefano Colombo, together with PhD researcher and Women in Ocean Science Ambassador Alessia Lavigne, this inspiring film highlights the urgent race to save these ancient creatures.
The documentary follows Alessia’s journey from her early days working in conservation in her home country of the Seychelles, to her current PhD research on the reproductive health of threatened turtles and tortoises at the University of Sheffield.
It was here in Sheffield that Alessia partnered with Dr Nicola Hemmings, a Behavioural Ecologist in the School of Biosciences. Together, they developed and tested a groundbreaking new method for assessing egg fertilisation for turtles and tortoises. Today, Alessia continues her vital PhD work, collaborating with zoos, captive breeders, and conservation groups across the UK, the Seychelles, and globally to protect vulnerable populations.
The screening will be accompanied by a Q&A with Alessia and Dr Hemmings about their research, conservation efforts, and careers in ecology and ocean science. We’ll also have fun, turtle-themed activities perfect for younger attendees (and enthusiastic older ones, too!).
This event is suitable for all ages.
