- Ranked universities are recognised for their collaboration on research with scholars from across the world, strong global reputation and higher proportion of international students and staff
The University of Sheffield has been named as one of the ‘most international universities in the world’ for 2026, according to Times Higher Education.
Ranked 46th in the world and 16th in the UK, this continues the University’s strong performance in the listing, which celebrates institutions with an outstanding international outlook and reputation.
Using data from the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, the listing demonstrates Sheffield’s work to collaborate on research with scholars from across the world, its strong global standing and high proportion of international students and staff.
The University of Sheffield has long been recognised for its global outlook and its commitment to supporting international students, who make a significant contribution to the UK economy, skills base and cultural life.
In 2013, the University together with Sheffield Students’ Union founded the #WeAreInternational campaign to champion this impact and highlight the value international students bring to communities across the country. Now led by the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA), the campaign is backed by more than 160 universities and colleges, alongside organisations including the British Council and the Home Office.
Reflecting the University’s commitment to independent thinking to shape solutions to global challenges, the University is also engaged in a wide range of research projects with international impact. These include collaborations with leading universities around the world to address pressing global challenges, from climate change to improving health outcomes. Recent examples include the development of a pioneering low-field MRI scanner in collaboration with international partners, which has the potential to make life-saving lung imaging more accessible worldwide.
The University has also forged strong overseas partnerships in industry, leading to opportunities for staff and student exchange, research links and inward investment into the local economy in South Yorkshire.
Professor Koen Lamberts, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, said:
“This recognition reflects the truly global nature of our University community and the strength of the partnerships we have built with institutions and organisations around the world.
“Our international outlook shapes everything we do, from the way we teach and support our students, to how we collaborate on research across borders. By bringing together diverse perspectives, we are able to generate new ideas and develop solutions to some of the most pressing global challenges.
“We are proud to welcome students and colleagues from across the globe, whose contribution enriches our University, our city and the wider communities we serve, and this recognition highlights the importance of those connections.”
